Some of his ideas seem to be utterly ludicrous, but he usually manages to pull it off (even if the invention itself is ludicrous and convoluted). Many of inventions would be described as by those in touch with popular culture as "steampunk", using old technologies to achieve a modern convenience, something that would come in handy in Elysium. | PERSONAL WEAKNESSES | Incredibly awkward with other people. While he enjoys being with people, he very often says or does the wrong thing and is greatly embarrassed. This is increased a hundredfold when around a woman he thinks is pretty.  "Eccentric" describes Mal in a word. His mind doesn't work like most. He talks to himself a lot about his latest invention, completely oblivious to anyone around him. He's prone to moments of great excitement, where he will bounce around and babble nearly incoherently, because his brain is working too fast for his mouth. He is very awkward around other people. He enjoys their company, but most don't understand the odd tinkerer, so he spends a lot of time alone. He's never had a serious relationship, as he's extremely awkward around women and tends to make a fool of himself. Someone like Mitsuko would absolutely confound him, with her forwardness. He's very a very sweet man. There's not a malicious bone in his body. He only gets angry if someone helpless is being physically harmed. When this happens, he will turn cold and angry, attacking the aggressor with all of his magical abilities. But these occasions are rare. Mal is normal seen just working on some invention, often a simple game or toy. He loves to make things that other people will have fun with.  Alistair Gray was a powerful and respected sorcerer in Scotland. When he was forty, he took twenty-year-old Mackenzie Stewart as his wife. They quickly had two daughters, Elspeth and Fiona. Several years later, Mackenzie became pregnant again. Mackenzie died in childbirth, finally giving Alistair his cherished son. Malcolm Stewart Alistair Gray was always small for his age. His older sisters looked him after. A few times as a young child, he accidentally referred to Elspeth as "Mummy". Alistair was far more interested in training his son than he was his daughters. He doted upon Malcolm, but was quite strict when Malcolm showed more interest in making his little toys than he was learning magic. Elspeth and Fiona were both a bit jealous of the attention their brother got, knowing they were both powerful witches in their own right. As he grew up, Malcolm was painfully awkward around other people. His awkwardness came from his complete obliviousness. He was absent-minded and rarely noticed how exuberant he was or how disinterested others were in his inventions. At the age of twenty, Malcolm's father engaged him to a friend of the family, a beautiful witch named Helena. Malcolm went along with it willingly, but showed very little interest in his fiancée. She broke off the engagement when it became clear Malcolm was far more interest in his inventions than he was her or gaining the same respect and power his father held in the magical community. When Malcolm was first introduced to the magical community, he was treated as a bit of a joke, earning the nickname The Daedalus. He remained oblivious to the distain. After a time, his clever inventions-- fusing technology and magic-- were treated with respect. While his reputation was nowhere near the revered respect of Alistair, he was thought of as a brilliant young man with a promising future. As Malcolm's reputation began to take a more favourable turn, Alistair began deathly ill and died, his son by his side. What Malcolm didn't know was his own sisters had poisoned his father, feeling spurned by his interest in their brother. Elspeth and Fiona fell in with a group of dark magic users and swore themselves the enemies of Malcolm Malcolm never discovered his sisters' treachery. He was brought to Elysium by a scout in order to avoid the oncoming darkness. He brought his beloved sisters with him, not knowing their secret plot against him. |
